Have you ever felt as if you couldn’t move when you are sleeping, or even when you are barely waking up? The feeling of experiencing dyspnea and feeling like your body is tied down by a “strong scary vibe” is very uncomfortable. Having to feel scared and hopeless as if there was nobody to help you around is an awful feeling especially when you think sleeping time should be relaxing and stress free. Those that do not experience any type of abnormal experiences while sleeping may have no idea of what I may be talking about, but it is serious to tell someone if they are experiencing or think they are experiencing something abnormal while sleeping. This topic will introduce what sleep paralysis is, what causes it, what can be done to treat it, and if it’s a sleep disorder. Also, I will go in depth in the steps I had to take in order to obtain that type of information.
Sleep paralysis is somewhat scary when a person experiences it and may also be unpleasant when your loved one is telling you how it feels. I do not have a lot of knowledge in this topic but from what I do know I know that this condition is basically when a person is not able to move or talk while sleeping. The person that is experiencing sleep paralysis may also feel as if a heavy “person” may be on top of them pressing on their chest, and covering their mouth so they won’t be able to talk. There are reports that people who experience sleep paralysis are also able to see paranormal things or paranormal human figures while sleep paralysis is taking place. I am not certain whether this is true or false, but I hope to go in depth with this report later in the future. Another thing that I was told by family and friends is that although the person tries their best to be able to move or talk, they are not able to do it, making it hard for their loved one to notice what is going on.
My motivation on researching this topic is because my father has experienced sleep paralysis multiple times. I would really like to get a better understanding of what is going, and that way I could help my father as well. Doing research on this topic will also give me a better understanding of what sleep paralysis is. Another reason that motivates me is that once doing more research on sleep paralysis, I will know how to help my father and if possible help him find professional help or treatment if there are any treatments for this condition. It’s very scary not to know if your loved one is safe while sleeping, or if they need your assistance. As a daughter I want my father to feel safe and not worry about if something is going to happen if he goes to sleep. Therefore, this is my motivational reason of why I decided to do some research on sleep paralysis.
While doing my research process I came across some very interesting articles that I believe will help me answer all of my questions in regards to Sleep Paralysis. In order for me to be able to find some useful information on my topic, I first used our school’s library database browser. Once on the website, I was able to specify my search or filter my search. Since my main focus is to do research, I went to the left side of the webpage where it says Quick links and scrolled down and double clicked on where it says Research Guides. I really like clicking on research guides because it provides a lot of information and is good for what I am basically doing which is research
. Once on research guide I went down to where it said English and then clicked on English 1010/1020 which in result, it gave me the options called Pro Quest, Omni File, and another just to name a few would be Academic One file. All of these are great for doing research but I prefer to use Pro Quest, and Omni File. I decided to stay with these because I feel like it gives me more of the information that I need, that other websites do not provide. The first source that I found helps me on my topic because it provides information on what sleep paralysis is and explains some of the things that is experienced. My first source is usually trying to figure out whether sleep paralysis could cause hallucinations.
The reason for being is because of a woman named Ana who had a study done on her to determine why it was she was “hallucinating” and what caused it. Ana would take care of her father that could barely take care of himself. One day Ana got really sick so a doctor went to go see her but to his surprise he found out that there was something else with her as in she had a mental problem. He began by doing a study on her to see why those weird episodes would happen to her and when, and to know when sleep paralysis would occur. Ana would have nightmares about black snakes and she wanted to know if sleep paralysis is the cause for that since it only happened while asleep. I believe this source will help me uncover information on whether sleep paralysis is a sleep disorder or not.
My second source also gives information about another person that has experience sleep paralysis multiple times in their life and is tired of it. She begins to provide the reader with specific information on different experiences she has ever had during different ages in their life and they explain how awful they felt at the moment.
